In honor of the holiday season, Public Trust proudly partnered with Operation Homefront in their first-ever Holiday Meals for Military event in the Denver Metro Area on Saturday, November 16. Operation Homefront’s mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families so they can thrive – not simply struggle to get by – in the communities they’ve worked hard to protect. Public Trust wanted to help further this mission through our $5,000 sponsorship and volunteer effort. Members of the Public Trust team spent their Saturday at the Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora setting up Christmas trees and decorations, craft and refreshment tables, and a large table of stocking stuffers for the military families before their arrival.
Throughout the afternoon, fifty military families including 150 children attended the event where the children were treated to toys, snacks, and crafts. How the Grinch Stole Christmas played on a projector in the gym, and  Santa, Mrs. Claus, and an elf from the North Pole paid a visit and led the children in Christmas carols. Santa told the story of The Night Before Christmas, and all the children got a chance to tell him what they wanted for Christmas and take a photo together.
As families got ready to leave, they received meal totes full of non-perishable items for their holiday dinners, various kitchen supplies, and a gift card to Safeway to help cover the cost of turkey or other holiday meats. After the event was over, volunteers stayed to break down all of the decorations, put away tables and chairs, and disassemble the trees to close out the day.
This was the first year Operation Homefront had enough funding to put on this event in the Denver Metro Area, and the turnout was great! Both Operation Homefront and Public Trust are thrilled at how much the children and families enjoyed themselves. One family noted that this was their first holiday away from home and that it had been a wonderful afternoon for them and their kids while other families wrote thank you notes and left them on the tables.
Along with the donation from Public Trust, Operation Homefront partnered with Safeway, P&G, and others to have the meal materials and gift cards donated. Public Trust plans to partner with Operation Homefront to help put on this event again next year!
